Bulgarian Academy of Science Gets a 15 Million Leva Increase in Budgeting

The government finally decided to give more money to the Bulgarian Academy of Science following several protests and social outcry. 15 million leva will be spent for “projects with a high return value, societal significance, and for the increase of doctorate scholarships."

Now, BAS will start negotiating for ending the protests from the academic community.

The problem is that the initial sum demanded by the protesters was 38 million leva, and the government isn’t giving even half of that. Whether the scientists will be happy with what they get or not will be revealed on the 21st of December, when a general assembly of the BAS will be conducted.

The Minister of Education Krasimir Vulchev commented: “The money will be taken from the central budget for scientific research. As you know, 2018 marks an increase in the financing for science in the state budget.”

The past reports of budget cuts in BAS were called “an attack on science.”
