Bulgarian man gets 1 year of jail time for the Brutal Murder of a dog

The court in Plovdiv has sentenced Hristo P. to one year and two month of jail time for the brutal murder of a dog. He can appeal the sentence in the coming 15 workdays.

On 21.06.2015 Hristo P. has performed an act of cruelty towards a dog. In public space, within the view of many witnesses, he tortured the animal which lead to its death in a state of agony. Two and a half years later, the court in Plovidv has found Hristo P. guilty of the crime. For his acts of cruelty, Hristo P. will receive one year and two months of jail time, but the effect of the sentence has been postponed with three years. For now, Hristo P. can appeal his sentence in the next 15 workdays.

Hristo P. has been judged by the Animal Protection Law which was implemented in Bulgaria in the year of 2008. During the year of 2011, the law has been augmented with a new line “325B”, which concerns cases of torture, crippling, mutilation and death. By this law, there are two categories of murder of vertebrates. First one considers the murder of vertebrates, which can lead to 3 years of jail time and a fine between 1,000 and 5,000 BGN (€500 - €2500). The second category, under which Hrito P. falls, is the murder of a vertebrate performed with extreme cruelty. For this crime, the sentence can be between 1-3 years of jail time and a fine from 2,000 – 5,000 BGN (€1,000 - €2,500).
