Two big Groups of Illegal Migrants Caught on Bulgarian Trains

For the past week, the Bulgarian Ministry of Internal Affairs has shared two announcements on illegal migrants getting caught on Bulgarian trains. Is this a temporary problem, or will Bulgaria turn into the new migrant corridor to Europe?

A Freight train has been stopped at the Central Railway Station in Sofia, Bulgaria. The reason for it was a mass of people who were discovered on top of the train. The electricity on the network was completely stopped, so the police could arrest the perpetrators. It turned out that the “hitchhikers” were more than 50 people. None of the people arrested were Bulgarian. They are economic migrants who have been passing through Bulgaria on their way to Western Europe. Thanks to the freeloaders, the Central Railway Station was completely blocked, which led to more than an hour of delays for all of the trains launching and passing through the capital.

This is not an isolated case. On the night of November 12, 2017 the police undertook an operation in the vicinity of the Central Railway Station, as many signals of suspicious people had been received during the day. On one of the freight trains, the police discovered 29 foreign citizens, none of which had their identity documentation on them. All of the foreigners have been arrested and will soon be questioned about the way they entered the country and their goals for entering Bulgaria. Since the beginning of 2017, there have been three cases of illegal migrants caught on Bulgarian trains, where during 2016 there were much more. If the tendency keeps the same, there will not be much to worry about in the country.
