Albania Recognizes the Bulgarian Minority: Macedonia Goes Crazy

A massive backlash by the Macedonians was the first reaction after Albania finally recognized Bulgarians as an official minority. For years Macedionians have been acting on including Bulgarians in their own minority - which is one of the official minorities in the country. Through propaganda and various campaigns the Macedonian state has tried to persuade Albanians that Bulgarians living in the country are, in fact, Macedonians.

Vasil Sterjovski from the party "Macedonian Union" came out with a statement, claiming that any vote in favor of the Bulgarian minority would just propogate the idea of "Great Bulgaria". Albania has a very small Bulgarian minority - according to different sources there are between 50,000 and 150,000 Bulgarians in the country. They reside in the areas of Prespa, Gora and Golo Brdo. Until now, however, only the Macedonian minorities were included in official statistics and censuses.
